Helping a Farnham Ex-Service Family Future-Proof Their Home

At BWC, we recently had the privilege of supporting a former serviceman and his wife, who lives with early onset dementia, by transforming their Farnham home to make it safer, warmer, and more sustainable for the years ahead. This project has been especially meaningful to our team, as it allowed us to give back to a family who has already given so much.

Future-Ready Upgrades for Safety and Comfort

Our work included a complete roof restructure, extensive insulation improvements, and the installation of solar panels and a heat pump to reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions. These upgrades build on an earlier phase of work, where we created a fully accessible downstairs extension with a specialist bedroom, ceiling hoists, and an adapted shower room.

Together, these adaptations ensure the home now meets the couple’s evolving health needs while providing lasting comfort and peace of mind.

Reliable Renewable Energy for Essential Medical Equipment

A key priority for us was ensuring the couple’s life-saving medical equipment would remain operational during a power outage. The new renewable energy system is designed to provide that protection, offering reassurance and security for the family.

Because familiar surroundings are so important for people living with dementia — helping reduce anxiety and support memory — we were careful to preserve the home’s layout and character throughout the renovation. The result is a space that feels safe, familiar, and ready for the future.

A Community Effort

Projects like this highlight what can be achieved through collaboration. Working closely with local trades, suppliers, and support partners, we helped the family navigate the various schemes and resources available to them. This teamwork has enabled the couple to remain together in their own home in Farnham, avoiding the need for hospital or residential care.

The new heat pump and solar system are expected to cut the family’s energy bills by up to 40%, making their home not only sustainable but also more affordable to run long term.

Why This Project Matters to Us

Ben Williams, Managing Director, said:

“This project was about giving back to someone who has already given so much. It’s been an honour to make their home safer, warmer and ready for the future. With the right people and the right approach, you can make a real difference — not just through the work you carry out, but by understanding why it matters.”

Supporting this family is our way of recognising that service continues beyond the battlefield — and that our communities play a vital role in honouring it.
